There will be a short presentation followed by an interview and a Q&A session with questions from our audience.

About James Chappel

James Chappel is the Gilhuly Family Associate Professor of History at Duke University. He specializes in the intellectual history of modern Europe and the United States, with a particular focus on themes such as religion, gender, and the family. Chappel has published two books and has contributed widely to both scholarly and non-scholarly platforms, including The New York Times and The Nation. He is also the incoming Director of Undergraduate Studies for Duke's History Department and is involved with the Duke Human Rights Center. Chappel's research spans the 20th century, with a particular interest in the transformation of the Catholic Church in 20th-century Europe and the history of old age and the welfare state in modern America.
